Patient Coordinator (Clinic)

JOB SUMMARY:

The OCEC Patient Coordinator performs a wide range of administrative, secretarial and clinical duties. The OCEC Patient Coordinator ensures a professional and efficient operation of the department by providing quality patient care in the preparation of the patient for surgery, as well as, routinely ensuring supplies are inventoried, ordered and reconciled. The OCEC Patient Coordinator also provides appropriate patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse. The OCEC Patient Coordinator requires clinical knowledge that pertains to scheduling of clinic and referral appointments, coordination of post-acute care and DME needs, obtaining laboratory specimens and diagnostic testing, and maintaining a complete and accurate medical record.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum high school graduate or equivalent; associate degree or CMA preferred
  • 1-3 years experience in orthopedics, preferably in a clinic setting
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Ability to multi-task while maintaining attention to detail
  • Above average critical thinking skills
  • Ability to perform blood draws, urine collections and EKG’s under the supervision of a registered nurse
  • Basic understanding of clinical tasks, patient care, orthopedic procedures, and medical terminology
  • Proficient in MS Office applications
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Recording vital signs, collecting blood and urine samples, and performing EKG’s
  • Greet  and “room” the patient in the examination room
  • Communicate patient findings and concerns to nurses
  • Schedule patient appointments and maintain communication to confirm future and referral appointments
  • Schedule patients for services and appointments in the Resource Scheduling module
  • Enter orders for laboratory and diagnostics tests and procedures in the Resource Scheduling Module
  • Work closely with the physician office staff to submit required pre-admission paperwork prior to the date of service.
  • Arrange, schedule and coordinate post-acute care with physical therapy clinics and home health agencies
  • Coordinate durable medical equipment for patient’s home use
  • Keep medical record complete and in order; scan medical record documents into electronic system.
  • Forward pertinent information from the medical record to orthopedic provider offices
  • Answer and direct incoming calls, mail, general correspondence and filings
  • Send communications to outpatient physical therapy clinics, home health and other post-acute providers
  • Create appointment reminders and ensure therapy prescriptions are forwarded to providers
  • Assist with administrative functions of Joint Class, Reunion Luncheons, and other JSC activities
  • Keep clinic stocked with necessary supplies
  • Verify the clinic schedule for the following day and prepare charts and patient folders.
